The Cape – Dinosaur Tracks – 14 Nights

Day 1-2

You fly to Port Elizabeth via Cape Town, arriving mid afternoon. After collecting your rental car, you will drive for 1 hour to spend a relaxing two nights at Woodall Country Lodge. The lodge has excellent facilities and great cuisine but you may also be interested to drive into the nearby Addo National Park which is noted for its elephant herds. The lodge can also provide  a guided game drive into the park for an extra cost

Day 3-4

This is an easy 2 1/2 hour drive to the beautiful town of Graaff-Reinet where you will stay at the luxurious Drosdty Hotel.  Although accommodation is on a B&B basis, the hotel has an excellent restaurant for lazy dinners under the stars. Graaff Reinet is the fourth oldest town in South Africa and is in the centre of the Camdeboo National Park. The scenery here is stunning and you will want to visit the amazing Valley of Desolation which feels like something out of prehistory. This entire location has yielded some extraordinary dinosaur skeletons and if you visit the sleepy dorp of Nieu Bethesda you can even go fossil hunting in the river bed before enjoying a craft beer and home produced goats cheese in the local brewery.

Day 5-6

From Graaff-Reinet it is a 5 hour drive across the unique landscape of the Great Karoo to Schoemanshoek close to Oudsthoorn. From here you can drive over the spectacular Swartberg Pass (as long as the weather is good) to quaint Prince Albert. This  village is full of British Victorian architecture together with thatched whitewashed cottages. The region has become very popular with artists and artisans and now hosts an olive festival. From here you are enjoy guided hiking in the imposing Swartberg Mountains. Here you will stay for two nights  in Altes Landhaus. This is  luxurious accommodation set in stunning gardens just 15 minutes from Oudtshoorn, the centre of the Ostrich industry, and a similar distance from the extraordinary Cango Caves.

Day 7-9

From here you will drive over the beautiful Outeniqua Pass into the Garden Route. After approximately 5 hours you will arrive at Plettenberg Bay where you will stay at Fynbos Ridge which is a beautiful boutique B&B set amidst its own private nature reserve. At certain times of the year, the location is a blaze of colour as the unique Proteas bloom. In this location you will have time to explore the many superb beaches, visit the timeless beauty of the Tsitsikamma Coastal National Park or just enjoy the many wonderful restaurants and wineries in this area.

Day 10-14

The final stage of your trip will be a 6 hour drive along excellent and scenic roads to Cape Town to stay at Glen Avon Lodge. which is set in the leafy, exclusive suburb of Constantia. Here you will find some of the oldest wineries in South Africa dating back to the 1680s. The lodge is just a 25 minute drive to the centre of Cape Town and Table Mountain and in the other direction around an hour’s drive to Cape Point. Glen Avon is a 5 star boutique hotel and is consistently one of South Africa Sun client’s favourites in Cape Town. After four nights here you will fly back home via Johannesburg full of wonderful memories.
